Holloway was supposed to travel home from the Caribbean island on May 30, 2005, but she did not show up. Her classmates last saw her outside of Carlos’n Charlie’s, an Oranjestad restaurant and nightclub.

She was in a car with Joran van der Sloot, Deepak and Satish Kalpoe, and other locals.

When questioned, the three guys stated that they dropped Holloway off at her hotel and denied knowing what happened to her.

Authorities detained Van der Sloot twice on suspicion of being involved in her disappearance, while the Kalpoes were arrested three times each. Due to a lack of evidence, the three suspects were each freed without being charged.

Aruban investigators undertook a massive search with the help of hundreds of volunteers. The hunt included American FBI special agents, 50 Dutch soldiers, and three specially prepared Dutch Air Force F-16 planes.

Holloway’s body was never discovered.

On December 18, 2007, Aruban prosecutors declared that the matter would be ended without any charges being brought against anyone.

After receiving video footage of Van der Sloot under the influence of marijuana, the Aruban prosecutor’s office reopened the case on February 1, 2008, claiming that Holloway died on the morning of her disappearance and that a friend had disposed of her body.

Van der Sloot later refuted his statements and claimed in an interview that he had sold Holloway into sexual slavery.

He then apologized for his remarks. Van der Sloot was convicted in January 2012 of the May 30, 2010, murder of Stephany Flores Ramrez, 21, in Lima, Peru. On January 12, 2012, Alabama judge Alan King ruled Holloway legally deceased at the request of Holloway’s father.

Holloway was born on October 21, 1986, in Memphis, Tennessee, as the first of two children to David and Elizabeth “Beth” Holloway.

Holloway graduated with honors from Mountain Brook High School in May 2005, which is located in a posh Birmingham suburb.

She was a member of the National Honor Society, as well as the school dance squad and other extracurricular activities.

Holloway was set to attend the University of Alabama on a full scholarship, where she intended to major in pre-medicine.
