He primarily played center for the Irish sevens squad, but he also filled in at fly-half occasionally. O’Brien participated for Ireland in the 2018 Hong Kong Sevens qualification, scoring four tries, but Ireland’s performance was not good enough to earn them a spot on the core team for the 2018–19 World Series as they were defeated by Japan 7–12 in the semifinal.

O’Brien represented Ireland in the London and Paris legs of the 2017–18 World Rugby Sevens Series. Despite being a non-core nation, Ireland surprised by placing third and seventh, respectively, in those competitions, with O’Brien scoring four tries in total.

The parents of Jimmy O’Brien, John O’Brien from Northfields and Caroline Fitzgerald from Glenconnor, are Clonmel natives.
O’Brien was born in Ireland’s County Kildare in the town of Eadestown. He represented Newbridge College in varsity rugby at his school. While at school, he was a fly-half, but with the Leinster academy, he switched to inside center.
