He became a partner at Y Combinator after initially working part-time. He was named the President of the company in 2014. He shared that he hoped to expand the company to fund 1,000 new companies every year.

In March 2014, it was announced that Altman had transitioned from President to a less-busy role as Chairman of the Board so he can focus properly on OpenAI. He finally exited the company in the first quarter of 2o20.
