A brain tumor claimed the life of Toronto Maple Leafs forward prospect Rodion Amirov on Monday. He was 21.

Amirov, the No. 15 overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft, was identified with the illness in February 2022. Before becoming hurt, he had three points (one goal, two assists) in ten games while playing with Salavat Yulaev Ufa of the Kontinental Hockey League in the 2021–22 season.

Amirov, who had just finished his fourth round of chemotherapy, was honored by the Maple Leafs in November during their Hockey Fights Cancer night. He was recuperating at the moment at home in Russia. On April 15, 2021, Amirov signed a rookie contract with the Maple Leafs.

The Associated Press was informed by agent Dan Milstein that Amirov passed away on Monday in Munich, Germany. The team announced in February 2022 that Amirov had a brain tumor and would have treatment in Germany in the hopes that he would eventually be able to resume his hockey career.
