Who is Ketanji Brown Jackson replacing in the Supreme Court?

Ketanji Brown Jackson is an American attorney and jurist who has served as a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit since 2021.

Prior to her elevation to an appellate court, from 2013 to 2021, Ketanji Bown served as a district judge for the United States District Court for the District of Columbia.

Ketanji Jackson was also vice chair of the United States Sentencing Commission from 2010 to 2014.

Since 2016, Ketanji Brown has been a member of the Harvard Board of Overseers.

On February 25, 2022, President Joe Biden announced that he would nominate Ketanji Brown Jackson to the position of Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States to fill the upcoming vacancy by Stephen Breyer, who announced his retirement on January 27, 2022, at the age of 83.

Stephen Gerald Breyer is an American lawyer and jurist who has served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States since 1994.

Stephen Breyer  was nominated by President Bill Clinton, and replaced retiring justice Harry Blackmun.

Stephen Breyer is generally associated with the liberal wing of the Court.

After the Judiciary Committee deadlocked in an 11–11 vote, Ketanji Brown’s nomination was advanced on April 4 by a 53–47 procedural vote in the Senate and she was subsequently confirmed by the same margin on April 7, 2022.
