Joseph Anthony McKinnon was a man who strangled his girlfriend and died of a heart attack while burying her body in the backyard, investigators say.

Joseph McKinnon’s body was found on Saturday, May 7 in the small town of Trenton, South Carolina, after neighbours reported an unconscious man.

As sheriff’s deputies investigated the death of the 60-year-old, they discovered a body wrapped in bin bags in a freshly dug hole. McKinnon is suspected of attacking Dent in their home and strangling her to death.

According to a statement from the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office, it was his partner, Patricia Dent, 65. A post-mortem examination revealed that she had been strangled, and neighbours remembered McKinnon digging a hole in the yard the day before.

Authorities believe he was nearly finished filling in the grave when he dropped his spade, walked away, and collapsed.
