Gypsy Rose Blanchard and her then-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, were convicted of murdering Gypsy’s mother, Dee Dee Blanchard, in June 2015.
The case gained widespread media coverage because of the complex and disturbing nature of the events. Dee Dee Blanchard had convinced many people, including medical professionals, that her daughter Gypsy suffered from various serious illnesses, leading to Gypsy undergoing unnecessary medical treatments and surgeries.

However, it was later revealed that Gypsy was not actually sick, and Dee Dee had been fabricating her daughter’s medical conditions. Feeling trapped and abused by her mother, Gypsy conspired with Godejohn to murder Dee Dee.
Godejohn carried out the killing in June 2015, and both he and Gypsy were eventually apprehended and charged with murder. Gypsy Rose pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and is currently serving a 10-year sentence; however, she was granted parole in September 2023 and is set to be released on December 28 2023.
The case has been the subject of various documentaries and dramatizations, including the HBO series “The Act,” which explores the disturbing dynamics of the mother-daughter relationship and the events that led to Dee Dee’s death.
