Who Is David Smith? Brit embassy guard spy jailed for 13 years after selling secrets to the Kremlin

Former British embassy security guard, David Smith has been convicted and jailed for 13 years for spying for Russia and selling secrets to the Putin-led government. He has pleaded guilty to all eight offences which fell under the Official Secrets Act.

The 58-year-old Englishman worked at the British embassy in Berlin, Germany, for eight (8) years before he was caught and expose  after a sting operation took place in August 2021.

“David Smith abused his position in the British embassy in Berlin to covertly collect and pass sensitive information to the Russian state. These crimes were an attack on our country and could have threatened national security. His actions were not just driven by money and greed. On multiple occasions, he expressed a strong dislike towards the UK and Germany and expressed empathy with the Russian authorities. These beliefs may have caused further damage had Smith not been discovered and prosecuted,” Head of the CPS special crime and counter terrorism division, Nick Price said.
