Jim Benning hired Willie Desjardins as head coach of the Vancouver Canucks on June 23, 2014. Willie made this regular-season coaching debut for the organisation on October 8, 2014.

Between the time Willie was hired and he was fired, he had a record of 109-110-27. He sits fifth overall in the ranking of Vancouver’s head coach winning percentage of .498.

On November 4, 2018, Willie was named interim head coach by the Los Angeles Kings after they fired John Stevens. Willie’s presence did not lead the team to improve as the King’s went 27-34-8 and finished in last place in the Western Conference.
One day after the season ended, the Kings announced that they would not bring Desjardins back from the 2019-20 season.
