Katie Meyer, a former Newbury Park High soccer goalkeeper, was discovered dead in her dorm room on the Stanford University campus on Tuesday, according to the school.

Meyer, 22, rose to national notoriety in 2019 as the hero of Stanford’s NCAA women’s soccer national championship squad, saving two penalty shots in the decisive shootout against North Carolina.

The 5-foot-9 senior was a lively teammate and ardent supporter of women’s sports at the Palo Alto institution, where she was studying international relations and history.

Meyer was a Burbank native who attended Century Academy in Thousand Oaks in 2018 following three years of soccer at Newbury Park High School.

Meyer’s death was not made public, and no further information was provided. The cause and manner of her death have not yet been determined, according to officials with the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Meyer’s death sparked outpourings of grief both locally and globally.

Eden Quiroz, a former Newbury Park High teammate, wrote on Instagram, “You are already very missed.”

Meyer was honoured by a number of her former club teammates.

“You were always such a bright light in this world,” Zoe Hasenauer, a former Royal High standout, said on Instagram, with a team photo from their Real SoCal club days.
