Harvey Weinstein is an American film producer, studio executive, and convicted rapist who was found guilty of first-degree criminal sexual act and third-degree rape in New York in 2020 and sentenced to 23 years in prison.

The actress Rose McGowan was one of the first women to speak out publicly about Weinstein, alleging that the producer assaulted her in 1997 at the Sundance Film Festival. She tweeted in 2016 that she had been raped by an unnamed studio head.
On October 5, 2017, The New York Times journalists Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey broke the story about Weinstein’s serious sexual misconduct allegations.
They claimed that dozens of women had accused film producer Harvey Weinstein of rape, sexual assault, and sexual abuse over 30 years.

Over 80 female actors eventually accused Weinstein of such behaviour. Weinstein denied having “any nonconsensual sex.”
At least six women filed complaints, and criminal investigations were launched in Los Angeles, New York City, and London.
Weinstein was arrested in New York in May 2018 and charged with rape and other offences. In February 2020, he was convicted of third-degree rape and a criminal sexual act. He was sentenced to 23 years in prison in March 2020.
