The character has been adapted into several films, most notably Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) starring Gene Wilder, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) starring Johnny Depp, and Wonka (2023) starring Timothée Chalamet. The latter film is a musical fantasy that tells the origin story of Wonka, featuring his early days as a chocolatier in Europe.

Wonka is not based on a real person, but some aspects of his personality and backstory may have been inspired by Dahl’s own experiences or by historical figures. For example, Wonka’s love of chocolate may have been influenced by Dahl’s childhood memories of Cadbury and Rowntree’s, two rival chocolate companies that would send samples to his school for testing.

Some of Wonka’s inventions, such as the Great Glass Elevator or the Television Chocolate, may have been inspired by science fiction or futuristic technology. Some of Wonka’s rivals, such as Arthur Slugworth or Prince Pondicherry, may have been based on real or fictional competitors in the chocolate industry, such as Henri Nestlé or Hans Christian Andersen’s The Emperor’s New Clothes.
