Leif K-Brooks also founded Octane AI, an e-commerce messenger and SMS platform, in 2016. He made the Forbes 30 under 30 list in 2018. However, Omegle faced many controversies and allegations of abuse, exploitation, racism, and discrimination over the years.
In November 2023, Brooks announced the end of Omegle, saying that it was no longer sustainable, neither financially nor psychologically. He posted a lengthy statement on the official Omegle page detailing the rise and fall of the website. Many users expressed their sadness and nostalgia over the shutdown of Omegle on social media.
