The Las Vegas judge who was attacked on Wednesday, January 4, 2024, by a defendant during his sentencing was Clark County District Judge Mary Kay Holthus. She was presiding over the case of Deobra Delone Redden, who was convicted of felony battery for assaulting a woman in a casino parking lot in 2023.

Redden, who was facing up to 15 years in prison, suddenly lunged at the judge’s bench and tackled her, knocking her out of her seat and causing a bloody brawl with court officials and attorneys. The chaotic scene was captured by courtroom video and widely circulated on social media.

The judge was taken to a hospital for treatment and later released. She suffered minor injuries and was expected to make a full recovery. As of January 4, 2024, there is no information available on the current condition of Judge Holthus.

Redden was subdued by security guards and taken back to jail. Redden was facing new charges of battery with intent to commit a crime, battery by a prisoner, and resisting a public officer. He could face an additional 20 years in prison if convicted of these charges.

This was not the first time that a Las Vegas judge was attacked by a defendant in court. In 2015, a child abuser named Terhain Woods punched a prosecutor in the face after he was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

In 2020, the Nevada Supreme Court ruled that another judge, William Kephart, retaliated against a defendant named Anthony Williams by imposing life without parole sentences after he cursed at the judge and a prosecutor during his sentencing for armed robbery.
