Holland’s time as president of BYU, saw him play a crucial role in improving the university, which is owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) and is one of the largest religious universities in the United States.

Holland became member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the LDS Church in 1994.

The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles is regarded the second-highest governing body in the LDS Church, and its members are believed to be special witnesses of Jesus Christ.
