Kelis accused Beyoncé of “theft” after Beyoncé sampled her 2003 song “Milkshake” in Renaissance cut “Energy.”

While “Milkshake” is originally Kelis’s song, she is not listed as one of its producers, composers, or lyricists, according to Tidal credits. The track’s producers are Chad Hugo, Pharrell Williams, Rob Walker, and the Neptunes. Also, Hugo and Williams are the composers and lyricists of “Milkshake.” Kelis is referenced in the credits as the song’s performer.
Upon the release of Renaissance, the full credits revealed that it was not a sample, but an interpolation of “Milkshake.”
The Milkshake singer Kelis, took to Instagram to share her grievances on Thursday, July 28 prior to Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” album release.
“My mind is blown too because the level of disrespect and utter ignorance of all 3 parties involved is astounding,” read a comment from Kelis’ @bountyandfull Instagram account on a fan account’s post.
“I heard about this the same way everyone else did,” she continued. “Nothing is ever as it seems, some of the people in this business have no soul or integrity and they have everyone fooled.”
When another Instagram user commented that they “always felt like Beyoncé really admire Kelis,” Kelis said, “Admire is not the word.”
Another fan wrote, “Thats a collab the world really needs,” with Kelis responding, “It’s not a collab it’s theft.”
Kelis has since released two videos on Instagram accusing Beyoncé, Williams, and Hugo of not notifying her of her song being interloped for the track. Kelis called Williams “petty” and that he “does this shit all the time” in order to spite her. “I have the right to be frustrated,” she said. “Why? Because no one had the human decency to call and go, ‘Hey, we’d like to use your record.’ The reason I’m annoyed is because I know it was on purpose.”
