Lake Michigan is often considered the most dangerous of the Great Lakes for swimming. This is due to its rough waters and strong longshore currents, which can be hazardous to swimmers.

These currents are a result of the lake’s elongated shape and parallel shores, causing waves to crash against the east and west edges and then flow back into one another in the center. This can create rip currents that can sweep unsuspecting swimmers out much farther than they can manage easily.

In the cold waters of the lake, swimmers can become disoriented and begin to panic. It’s estimated that the total number of deaths on the lake is almost 300,000, making it a tragic beauty in the natural environs of the American Midwest.

Therefore, while the Great Lakes are a beautiful and integral part of both the United States and Canada, it’s important to exercise caution and be aware of the potential dangers when considering a swim in Lake Michigan.
