Denis McDonough is the 11th Secretary of Veterans Affairs in the United States. Denis McDonough was born in Stillwater, Minnesota on December 2, 1969.

He was one of 11 children born into a devout Irish Catholic family, his grandparents coming from Connemara in the Gaeltacht.

McDonough attended Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota after graduating from Stillwater Area High School in 1988.

McDonough earned a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, in history and Spanish from Saint John’s University in 1992.

He travelled extensively throughout Latin America after graduation and taught high school in Belize.

McDonough worked as an aide for the United States House Committee on Foreign Affairs from 1996 to 1999. In 2004, McDonough was a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress.

McDonough became a senior principal at the Markle Foundation, a non-profit, in 2017. McDonough is a visiting senior fellow in Carnegie’s Technology and International Affairs Program and a practice professor at Notre Dame’s Keough School of Global Affairs.
