Australian journalist and political commentator, Barrie Cassidy was born on March 4, 1950, in Wangaratta, Victoria, and was raised in the Victorian town of Chiltern.

Barrie began his career in 1969, as a cadet on the Albury Border Morning Mail.
He went on to work with the Shepparton News, following a stint with the Melbourne Herald.

He joined the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, as a political journalist and correspondent for radio and television in 1979.
Between 1986 and 1991, Cassidy served as to Press Secretary to Labor prime minister Bob Hawke.
