A native of Columbia, Colter completed his high school education at Calhoun County High School before enrolling at Benedict College.

Following his freshman year, he transferred to the University of South Carolina where he earned a bachelor’s degree in theater in 1999.

Colter also received an MFA degree in acting from the Rutgers University Mason Gross School of the Arts.

After his first television role in an American medical drama television series ER in 2002, Colter went on to star as Lamar in The Parkers.
