Where is Lothar Matthäus now? – Lothar Matthäus, a former German international and Ballon d’Or winner, is now a co-owner of the Ghanaian football team Accra Lions. The agreement was officially announced in Accra on Tuesday, May 23. Accra Lions is valued at $2 million (€1.85 million) by Transfermarkt. However, details of the level of Matthäus’ personal investment have not been disclosed.

Matthäus is keen to develop potential in West Africa and provide up a way to Europe for young players, working with business partners Oliver König, a former German player agent, and former Ghanaian international Frank Acheampong.
Speaking about the deal to Bild, Matthaus said:
“Of course, it’s a business model. Ghana has always had huge potential for talent, you can see that in the national team,”
“We want to bring young players to Europe. In a serious way and already well-trained. That’s why we’re also investing in the training ground here.”

Accra Lions are in their second season of the Ghana Premier League and have been playing some of the league’s greatest football.
Accra Lions who look set for a mid-table finish, currently occupy the ninth position on the Ghana Premier League table, nine points behind league leaders, Medeama Sporting Club.
Matthäus, who was born on March 21, 1961, is the most capped German footballer of all time, having retired with 150 appearances (83 for West Germany) and 23 goals in 20 years.
Matthäus was named on Pelé’s FIFA 100 list of the greatest living football players.
In his book Yo soy el Diego (I am the Diego), Diego Maradona had this to say about Matthäus:
“He is the best rival I’ve ever had. I guess that’s enough to define him.”
