Groundhog Day is a tradition that dates back to the late 1800s, when Pennsylvania Germans observed the behavior of a groundhog emerging from its burrow on February 2. According to the legend, if the groundhog sees its shadow, it means six more weeks of winter. If it doesn’t, it means an early spring.

Groundhog Day 2024 falls on a Friday, February 2. The festivities take place at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, where thousands of spectators gather to witness Phil’s forecast. The event is free to attend and starts at 3 a.m. with music, entertainment, and food. The prediction is announced at 7:15 a.m., followed by more celebrations and activities.

Punxsutawney is not the only place that celebrates Groundhog Day, though. There are other groundhogs around the country that make their own predictions, such as Staten Island Chuck in New York, General Beauregard Lee in Georgia and Buckeye Chuck in Ohio. However, Punxsutawney Phil is considered the original and most accurate groundhog, even though his success rate is only about 40%.

If you are a fan of the 1993 movie “Groundhog Day”, starring Bill Murray as a weatherman who relives the same day over and over again, you might also want to visit Woodstock, Illinois, where the movie was filmed. Woodstock hosts its own Groundhog Day events, including a walking tour of the movie locations, a trivia contest and a screening of the film.
