A full international since 2000, Cambiasso won 52 caps for Argentina and represented the country at the 2006 World Cup, the 2005 Confederations Cup, and the Copa América in 2007 and 2011.

He hung up his boots on 8 September 2017, two months after his contract with Olympiacos expired.
