Where does Torrey Pines rank in golf?

Torrey Pines South has been ranked #5 on a list of America’s 30 best municipal golf courses in 2021.

The course is named after the Torrey Pine trees that are native to the area and are prominent throughout the course.

Torrey Pines Golf Course is a 36-hole public golf facility located in La Jolla, California, near San Diego. It is owned and maintained by the City of San Diego. Torrey Pines is a municipal facility and has two courses, the North and the South.

Torrey Pines Golf Course’s South Course was redesigned in 2001 by Rees Jones in preparation for the 2008 U.S. Open. It is now 7,698 yards with a par of 72.

The Torrey Pines South Course is the more challenging of the two and is the host of the 2008 & 2021 U.S. Open Championships.

More than 80,000 rounds annually are played on the North Course alone, while the South receives 60,000.

Designed by legendary course architect William P. Bell and completed by his son, William F. Bell, Torrey Pines opened in 1957.
