James Leo Krause was born on June 4, 1986, in Newport News, Virginia, United States of America. James Krause attended Odessa High School in Missouri where he competed in wrestling and graduated in 2004.

James Krause had an excellent amateur career with a record of 18–1 and had two championships before he turned professional.
