When was the last case of monkeypox in the United States?

Cases of monkeypox in the United States are extremely rare. Monkeypox does not occur naturally in the United States, but cases have occurred as a result of international travel or the importation of animals from areas where the disease is more prevalent.

On November 16, 2021, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Maryland Department of Health confirmed the last case of Monkeypox in the United States.

The patient was a U.S. resident who had recently returned from Nigeria.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention assisted state and local health officials, airline and travel industry partners, and other stakeholders in identifying people who may have had contact with the patient.

Because symptoms can appear up to 21 days after infection, contacts were asked to keep track of their health for that period
