Larry Mahan, the ProRodeo Hall of Famer who was possibly the biggest superstar in rodeo history, died on Sunday, May 7. He was 79.

Born on November 21, 1943, in Salem, Oregon, Mahan began competing in professional rodeo at the age of 14.

From 1966 through 1970, he was World All-Around Champion five years in a row, and a sixth time in 1973.

The Great American Cowboy, a documentary about his 1973 comeback and competition with Phil Lyne, received the Oscar Award for Documentary Feature in 1974.

Mahan won six all-around titles, the last of which was not consecutive. His five consecutive all-around titles were not broken until 1979, when Tom Ferguson won his sixth consecutive title.

Mahan appeared in the 1972 film The Honkers, directed by Steve Ihnat. He made his film debut in 1975 with Six Pack Annie.

Mahan co-starred in Tommy Lee Jones’s 1995 television film The Good Old Guys, which also starred Sissy Spacek, Matt Damon, and Joaquin Jackson.

Mahan was a color commentator for the Professional Bull Riders Built Ford Tough Series on the Outdoor Life Network for the 2003 season, and he also anchored RFD-Equestrian TV’s Nation until 2009.
