His election came after a closely contested presidential race that involved multiple candidates and a runoff election. However, none of the candidates managed to secure the required majority of votes to win outright in the first round.

As a result, a runoff election was scheduled between Guillermo Lasso and Andrés Arauz. The second round took place on April 11, 2021. Ultimately, Guillermo Lasso emerged as the victor in the runoff election, securing 52.4% of the votes, while Andrés Arauz received 47.6%.

Guillermo Lasso’s presidency was notable for COVID-19 vaccination initiatives as well as economic relief packages financed by tax increases on the wealthy and IMF funding. However, his economic policies, as well as the rise in food and fuel prices, sparked a wave of protests across the country.

The government’s response has raised concerns about human rights violations, with security forces cracking down on indigenous protests. In addition to allegations of excessive force against journalists. Lasso’s approval rating has steadily declined throughout 2022 and 2023.
