He served as the Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) from 2018 until his passing in 2023.

In the business sector, Ballard was the president of Valley Music Hall in Bountiful, Utah. Although the music hall faced financial challenges and eventually failed, investors recovered their money when the LDS Church purchased the building.

His role in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles positioned him as a revered figure among church members, accepted as a prophet, seer, and revelator.

At the time of his death on November 12, 2023, Ballard held the position of the third most senior apostle in the LDS Church.
