Cutugno began his musical career as a drummer and, at the age of 19, formed his first band, Toto e i Tati. He then co-founded the disco band Albatros with Lino Losito and Mario Limongelli.

In March 2019, a group of Ukrainian lawmakers attempted to prevent Cutugno from performing in Kyiv by requesting, in an open letter to the head of the country’s security services, Vasyl Hrytsak, to bar the singer from entering Ukrainian territory, labeling him a “Russian war supporter in Ukraine.”
