The infantile Pee-wee Herman persona began as a stage act, which quickly led to a 1981 HBO special.

In the 1970s, Reubens joined the Los Angeles-based improvisational comedy troupe The Groundlings, where he worked with Bob McClurg, John Paragon, Susan Barnes, and Phil Hartman for six years.

Hartman and Reubens became fast friends, frequently writing and collaborating on projects together. Reubens penned sketches, honed his improvisational talents, and co-created the Pee-wee Herman character with Hartman.

When did Pee-wee Herman get canceled?

Pee-wee’s Playhouse had already ended by the time Reubens was arrested. He cited an overworked crew and a decline in the show’s quality in his decision against making a sixth season.

The show’s popularity and quantity of episodes had allowed for rerun broadcasts, but CBS canceled the reruns on July 29, 1991.
