A proud looking but rather worn out President Mwai Kibaki finally handed over the Kenyan presidency to his successor, Uhuru Kenyatta, on 9 April 2013 after 11 years in office at a public inauguration ceremony held at Kenya’s largest stadium.

Mwai Kibaki said;

“I am happy to pass the torch of leadership to the new generation of leaders.”

Mwai Kibaki also thanked his family and all Kenyans for the support they had given him throughout his tenure in office, and cited the various achievements his government made.

The handover marked the end of his presidency and of his 50 years of public service.

On 22 April 2022, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced that Mwai Kibaki had died on the morning of Friday 22nd April 2022, aged 90.
