Matt Smith was one of the first actors to try out for the lead part in Doctor Who. His performance astounded the whole production team, including recently appointed producer Steven Moffat and BBC Wales Head of Drama and executive producer Piers Wenger.

Smith also went through the casting process for the role of John Watson in Steven Moffat’s Sherlock, but the director passed because he felt Benedict Cumberbatch was a better fit for the role of Holmes.
Smith’s portrayal of the Doctor was characterized by his enthusiasm for and interest in every aspect of the cosmos.

He performed the Doctor Who theme with Orbital at the Glastonbury Festival in June 2010, in addition to headlining the Doctor Who Prom at the Royal Albert Hall in July 2010.

He even carried the Olympic flame in Cardiff in May 2012, replicating the Doctor’s feat from a Doctor Who episode from 2006.
Later, Smith said that she had wanted to stay on the show longer and work with Jenna Coleman more. Additionally, he said that he almost turned down the part of the Doctor in an interview from 2018 on Desert Island Discs.
When did Matt Smith wear a wig?
Speaking of wig issues, fans of the BBC science fiction series Doctor Who will recall that Matt Smith once shaved his head (for the Ryan Gosling movie Lost River) and then returned with a completely bald dome, prompting the Beeb to make him a wig out of his own hair (and leading to the memorable on-screen moment below).
