However, Näslund’s love for the game led to a brief comeback during the 2009–10 season, where he returned to play for Modo before ultimately retiring for the second time in 2010.

His retirement marked the end of a distinguished 15-season career that saw him don the jerseys of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Vancouver Canucks, and New York Rangers.

Known by the endearing nicknames “Nazzy” among Canucks fans and “Macke” or “Mackan” in his native Sweden, Näslund left an indelible mark on the ice hockey world with his exceptional offensive skills, renowned for his lethal wrist shot and impressive stickhandling.

Näslund’s professional journey began with Modo Hockey in the Elitserien after playing junior hockey within the Modo organization. His talent and potential were recognized when he was selected in the first round, 16th overall, by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut in the 1993–94 season.

After his tenure with the Penguins, Näslund was traded to the Vancouver Canucks in 1996, where he would spend 12 impactful years, including a remarkable eight years as the team captain. His leadership and scoring prowess made him a central figure in the Canucks’ success.

Näslund led the team in scoring for seven seasons, earning three first-team All-Star selections (2002, 2003, 2004), a Lester B. Pearson Award in 2003, and finishing as a runner-up for the Hart, Art Ross, and Rocket Richard Trophies in 2003.

His contributions to the Canucks were further recognized with five Cyclone Taylor Trophies as the team’s most valuable player and seven consecutive Cyrus H. McLean Trophies as the leading point-scorer—both standing as club records.
