When did Chris Dawson become commissioner?

Christopher John Dawson APM is an Australian police officer who is the Commissioner of Western Australia Police. He has been appointed as Western Australia’s 34th Governor and will assume office in July.

Dawson began his career with the Western Australian Police Force as a cadet in February 1976. In 1999, he was elevated to the superintendent. He was awarded the Australian Police Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2002.

Under Karl O’Callaghan, Dawson was appointed Deputy Commissioner in July 2004. In April 2014, he departed Western Australia Police to become the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission’s Chief Executive Officer. In addition, he served as the Director of the Australian Institute of Criminology. In August 2017, he was appointed Commissioner of the Western Australian Police Force.

Dawson headed the force throughout the COVID-19 outbreak after being appointed in 2017, including monitoring the state’s tight borders and travel restrictions.

As the State Emergency Coordinator and earlier the state’s vaccination commander, Mr McGowan said he was “vital” in dealing with the epidemic in WA.
