The Bengals previously played in Super Bowls XVI in 1982 and XXIII in 1989, both times against the San Francisco 49ers.

The last time they played for a title was 1989. It was the second trip to the big game the team had made in its franchise history, and the second time it had faced the 49ers.
While the Bengals made the playoffs seven times between 2005 and 2015, they fell in the Wild Card round each time. Cincinnati took down the Seattle Seahawks and Buffalo Bills as they headed to the Big Game, but could not handle the 49ers.

However, the Cincinnati Bengals just won the AFC Championship game vs the Kansas City ChiefSuper Bowl going to the SuperBowl for the first time since the 1988 season.
Just reaching the game alone would be history for the team. Winning it would be another major step for one of the NFL’s franchises that have yet to hoist the Lombardi Trophy.
The Bengals who have gone a long time (33 years) without appearing in the Super Bowl, will look to win the title for the first time on Sunday, Feb. 13, when they’ll face either the Rams or 49ers.
Among teams that have been to a Super Bowl, only three teams have had a long absence: the Jets, Vikings, and Dolphins.
