Kathy Whitworth turned professional in 1958 and won her first Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tournament four years later.

She was an excellent putter as well as a strong driver, and she dominated the tour from 1963 to 1973.

Kathy Whitworth won eight tournaments in 1963. From 1965 to 1968, and again from 1970 to 1973, she was the LPGA’s leading money winner.

Kathy Whitworth won the LPGA Player of the Year award seven times (1966-1969, 1971-1973), as well as the Associated Press Woman Athlete of the Year award in 1965 and 1966.

Kathy Whitworth surpassed Mickey Wright to become the LPGA’s all-time money winner in 1969; in 1981, she became the first woman golfer to earn a million dollars in her career.

Kathy Whitworth won every major tournament on the LPGA tour except the U.S. Open and was a seven-time Vare Trophy winner for best average on the tour (1965-67, 1969-72). Her 88 career wins on US tours set a record for both men and women.

Kathy Whitworth was inducted into the LPGA Hall of Fame in 1975 and the International Women’s Sports Hall of Fame in 1984.
