What were Van Gogh last words?

Van Gogh is thought to have shot himself in the chest with a 7mm Lefaucheux pinfire revolver on July 27, 1890. There were no witnesses, and he died 30 hours later.

According to his brother Theo, Vincent’s final words as he lay on his death bed were, “The sadness will last forever.”

Van Gogh suffered from mental illness, psychotic episodes, and delusions, and despite his concern for his mental stability, he frequently neglected his physical health, did not eat properly, and drank excessively.

He spent time in psychiatric hospitals, including one in Saint-Rémy. He was discharged and moved to the Auberge Ravoux in Auvers-Sur-Oise, near Paris, where he was treated by homoeopathic doctor Paul Gachet.

Vincent left the Saint-Rémy psychiatric institution in May 1890, hoping to live independently with his condition. However, the depression persisted.

The gun Van Gogh is said to have used was rediscovered in 1965 and auctioned off as “the most famous weapon in art history” on June 19, 2019.

The gun sold for €162,500 (£144,000; $182,000), nearly three times the expected price.
