When her father, a “policeman and a talented jazz musician,” decided to emigrate to Britain, followed by her mother and Benjamin’s younger sister and youngest brother, the four older children were left in the care of family friends, with Benjamin and her older sister, Sandra, being separated from their brothers.
The people who were in charge of Benjamin and her sister were secretly abusive.

Benjamin and her sister frequently attempted to write to their parents to inform them of the abuse, but the letters were always read and censored before being sent.
The children moved to Beckenham, Kent, to join him in 1960.
She has spoken about the racist experiences she had as an immigrant in Britain, such as with neighbors and at school.
Floella left school at the age of 16 with the intention of becoming Britain’s first black female bank manager, but instead became an actress, presenter, writer, independent producer, working peer, and an active advocate for the welfare, care, and education of children all over the world.
She also founded and ran a successful film and television production company.
