The book is based on a Kentucky farmer, Arthur Shelby, who incurs losses on his farm produce because he was indebted.

Arthur and his wife Emily believe that they have a good relationship with their slaves.

They decide to raise funds for their farming business by selling two of theit slaves – Uncle Tom and Harry, to Mr. Haley, a ruthless slave trader.

Uncle Tom is a young slave with a wife and children, while Harry is the son of Emily’s maid, Eliza.

Emily is not in support of the decision because she had promised her maid that her son would never be sold.
