Xeroderma is a skin condition characterized by excessively dry skin. It can have various causes, such as environmental factors, nutritional deficiencies, systemic illnesses, or medications. One of the possible causes of xeroderma is a deficiency of vitamin A.

Vitamin A is essential for the maintenance of healthy skin, mucous membranes, and vision. Vitamin A deficiency can lead to xeroderma, as well as night blindness, increased susceptibility to infections, and impaired growth and development.

To prevent and treat xeroderma caused by vitamin A deficiency, it is important to consume adequate amounts of vitamin A from food sources or supplements. Vitamin A is found in animal products such as liver, eggs, dairy products, and fish oil.

It is also found in plant sources such as carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, kale, and other dark green leafy vegetables. The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for vitamin A for adults is 900 micrograms (mcg) for men and 700 mcg for women. If you have dry skin that doesn’t go away or keeps returning, you should consult a dermatologist to determine the cause and the best treatment option.

Dry skin can be treated with moisturizers, emollients, or skin creams that contain ingredients such as lanolin, petrolatum, vegetable oils, or mineral oil. These products help restore the moisture and lipids in the outer layer of the skin and prevent further cracking and peeling.
