Flatley himself revealed to the media in 2003 that he had a rare form of skin cancer he was diagnosed with, which he had been battling for some time. The cancer was called malignant melanoma.
“It was purely by chance that it was noticed,” he said.
He also once suffered a virus that left him in bed for quite a long time.
“Nobody knew what the illness was, and they still don’t. They tested for every virus known to man, and I didn’t even have any of them. But sometimes you just can’t explain things. My body had simply had enough. I’m convinced the reason I got ill was that I was burn out. I’d been working at a tremendous pace physically, for years and years – not just performing but running my own business, too. I’d had years of dancing too hard and partying too hard, and when you come off stage and 15,000 people are on their feet, screaming for encores, it takes long time to come down from that. Your adrenal glands are bursting,” he said.
