Youth With A Mission (YWAM) is a global Christian organization that was founded in 1960 by Loren and Darlene Cunningham. The organization was established with the vision of sending young people out into various nations to share the message of Jesus, and which would involve Christians of all Christian denominations.

YWAM is a Christian organization, and it is not affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), also known as the Mormon Church. The LDS Church has its own missionary program, which is separate from YWAM .

Founded by American missionary Loren Cunningham and his wife Darlene Cunningham, YWAM has evolved over the years to become a global movement dedicated to “knowing God and making Him known.” The story of YWAM began with a vision that Loren Cunningham received in 1956 while he was a 20-year-old student in an Assemblies of God College.

In 1960, YWAM was officially founded, initially focusing on engaging young people in Christian missions. One of the defining moments in YWAM’s early history was the organization’s first project in 1966 when a team embarked on a vocational mission trip to Liberia to build a road through the jungle to a leper colony.

This endeavor marked the beginning of YWAM’s hands-on approach to missionary work and community development. Over the years, YWAM expanded its reach, becoming a non-denominational organization by 1964. By 1966, YWAM had teams stationed in various nations, including New Zealand and Tonga.

The year 1969 saw the establishment of the School of Evangelism in Switzerland, which later evolved into the Discipleship Training School (DTS) program that continues to this day.

In 1977, YWAM made a significant move by purchasing the Pacific Empress Hotel in Kona, Hawaii, which would eventually become the campus for the Pacific and Asia Christian University, a precursor to the University of the Nations.

YWAM is a member of several organizations, including the International Orality Network, Call2All, OneStory Project, and the United Bible Societies, demonstrating its commitment to working together with like-minded entities to fulfill the Great Commission.
