James Lovelock was married on two occasions: to Helen Mary Hyslop from 1942 till her death in 1989 and to Sandra Jean Orchard from 1991 till his death in 2022. James Lovelock had four children: two of which were males and the other two were females.

The names of the children of James Lovelock are John Lovelock, Christine Lovelock Curthoys, Jane Lovelock Flynn, and Andrew Lovelock.

James Lovelock was an alumnus of the Victoria University of Manchester, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, and the University of London.
