It began on the day he fell while hanging curtains for his new home and injured his side, causing him much pain.
His injury worsens and takes a negative turn on his health. The condition affected his behavior towards his family.
He visits a physician who says his health condition was rather a mysterious one, as he could not confirm the cause.
Several remedies were tried to obtain a cure for Ivan Ilyich, but to no avail. The pain grew so intense that he had to stop working and became confined to bed.
Ivan Ilyich spends his last days loving his daughter and wife, and feels pity for them.
