About Derek Chauvin

Derek Chauvin’s name became synonymous with tragedy when he, as a Minneapolis police officer, took the life of George Floyd on May 25, 2020.

A member of the Minneapolis Police Department for nearly two decades, Chauvin’s career was marred by 18 complaints and involvement in three police shootings, one of which proved fatal.

The turning point came when, during an arrest alongside three other officers, Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck for a harrowing nine minutes. Floyd’s desperate plea of “I can’t breathe” echoed worldwide, sparking protests and a reckoning on police brutality.

Dismissed by the MPD on May 26, Chauvin faced trial in early 2021.

Convicted on April 20 for unintentional second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter, Chauvin received a 22.5-year prison sentence on June 25.

Transferred to FCI Tucson in August 2022, the once-officer faced a grim twist of fate on November 24, 2023, when he was stabbed by a fellow inmate at the Arizona facility. Chauvin’s story remains a tragic chapter in the pursuit of justice.
