Jared’s amateur career in mixed martial arts began in 2011, when he won his first two fights by knockout.

The same year, he made his professional MMA debut in Alaska, and in five years, he made a record of 7–0.

In 2015, Jared faced Shawn Jordan in a Heavyweight bout at UFC 182, but lost the fight via knockout in the first round.

The same year, Jared was made to replace injured Matt Van Buren, in a fight with Jonathan Wilson at UFC Fight Night 73.

But Jared could not go ahead due to an injury. He was later replaced by Chris Dempsey.

After returning from his injury break in 2016, Jared faced Cyril Asker at the UFC Fight Night: Rothwell vs. dos Santos.

He ended up defeating Asker by knockout by a combination of elbows and punches.

The win also earned Cannonier his first Performance of the Night bonus award.

In January 2022, he earned a Performance of the Night bonus award, following his bout with Derek Brinson at the UFC 270.

On July 2, 2022, Jared lost to Israel Adesanya at the UFC 276 Middleweight Championship via a unanimous decision.
