Jodie Foster had expressed interest in returning to the role following Silence of the Lambs but disliked the eventual novel. The official reason given for her absence was that she was working on another project, Flora Plum.

In 2013, Foster received the honorary Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 70th Golden Globe Awards. In 2015, Jodie Foster received the Laura Ziskin Lifetime Achievement Award at the Athena Film Festival.
