American actress, writer and translator Molly Ringwald became a household name in the 1980s thanks to her memorable roles in several popular teen films.

However, the movie that really made her a star was “Sixteen Candles,” a 1984 coming-of-age comedy written and directed by John Hughes. In the film, Ringwald played Samantha Baker, a high school sophomore who feels neglected by her family when they forget her sixteenth birthday.
The movie was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $20 million at the box office and earning Ringwald a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy. After “Sixteen Candles”, she went on to star in two more films written and directed by John Hughes, “The Breakfast Club” (1985) and “Pretty in Pink” (1986), solidifying her status as an icon of the decade’s teen culture.

Since her breakout roles in the 1980s, Ringwald has continued to work in the entertainment industry.
