The Nupe are an ethnic group native to North Central Nigeria. They are the dominant ethnic group in Niger State and a minority in Kwara State. The Nupe are also present in Kogi State and The Federal Capital Territory.

What language is spoken by Nupe?

The Nupe language belongs to the Nupoid branch of the Benue-Congo group of languages. Other languages in the group are Igbira (Ebira), Gade, and Kakanda. Nupe is related most closely to Kakanda in structure and vocabulary. There are at least two markedly different dialects: Nupe Central and Nupe Tako.

Which language is Nupe?

The Nupe language family (Nufawa, Nupeci, Nupecidji, Nupenchi, Nupencizi) is spoken primarily by the Nupe people of the Middle Belt region of Nigeria. The Igboid languages are found in southeastern Nigeria and number some 20 million speakers, with at least another million second-language speakers. The more than 50 Igboid dialects have been variously grouped into seven main dialect clusters.
